Digital Patterns and Sewing in Modern Times
Here at the shop, we were talking about our favorite traditional sewing pattern companies like Butterick, Simplicity, McCall’s, and Vogue patterns are struggling (RIP JoAnn Fabrics). It got us thinking about how lucky we are to live in a time where so many amazing patterns are available digitally. Instead of waiting for a paper envelope in the mail or hunting for something in-store, you can purchase and download patterns instantly—ready to print right from home.
Some of my go-to designers for bag and garment patterns include Noodlehead, Helen’s Closet, and Friday Pattern Company. But truly, the list of talented digital designers is endless.
If quilting is your passion, here are a few of our favorites:
- Meghan Collins: Hearts Quilt
- Modernly Morgan: Hodgepodge Quilt
- Lo & Behold Stitchery: Knitted Blooms
A Quick Printing Tip
Printing at home does come with its own challenges, and my most recent project reminded me of just how important it is to check your scaling before you cut into fabric.
Always make sure you’re printing at 100% scaling (or “Actual Size”)—otherwise, even being off by a few percent can throw off your whole project. I discovered that when I printed directly from my iPhone, there wasn’t an obvious option to adjust scaling. I had to dig around in my printer’s app to find it. On a computer, those settings are usually much easier to spot, so that’s often the safest route.
Digital patterns open up a whole new world of creativity, with immediate access to designs from talented makers all over the globe. Whether you’re making a bag, garment, or quilt, there’s inspiration just a click away.
Happy sewing, friends!
